چکیده

Here we demonstrate a model that combines Tweets following significant earthquakes with basic site and earthquake characteristics to produce a rapid estimate of the ground shaking intensity. We used all geo-tagged Tweets around the world containing the keyword “earthquake” or “tsunami” in several languages that occurred in the first 10 minutes following Japanese earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater from 2011 to 2012. Using different regression models, we found relevant features and the best model by minimizing the mean squared error between model predictions and historical estimates of shaking intensity. We found that the model with lowest error was based on a combination of earthquakeand Tweet-based features, such as local site conditions, source-to-site distance, and number of Tweets within a certain radius. Ground shaking intensity estimates from our model are comparable with historical recordings and conventional estimates provided, for example, by the United States Geological Survey ShakeMaps. Therefore Tweets may be a useful additional data source following significant earthquakes, especially in regions without an extensive network of recording stations. 1 PhD Candidate, Dept. of Civil Eng., Stanford University, Stanford, CA USA 2 Consulting Professor, Institute of Computational and Mathematical Eng., Stanford University, Stanford, CA USA * The first two authors contributed equally to this work. Combining Multiple Earthquake Models in Real Time for Earthquake Early Warning

The ultimate goal of earthquake early warning (EEW) is to provide local shaking information to users before the strong shaking from an earthquake reaches their location. This is accomplished by operating one or more real-time analyses that attempt to predict shaking intensity, often by estimating the earthquake’s location and magnitude and then predicting the ground motion from that point sourc...

Adding secondary hazard and ground-truth observations to PAGER's loss modeling

A rapid, holistic view of earthquake disasters begins with earthquake location and magnitude, alerted by seismic networks. The initial source characteristics, along with any available ground-shaking observations, can be used to rapidly estimate the shaking extent, its severity (e.g., ShakeMap), and its likely impact to society, for example, employing the U.S. Geological Survey's Prompt Assessme...

Automatic earthquake confirmation for early warning system

Earthquake early warning studies are shifting real-time seismology in earthquake science. They provide methods to rapidly assess earthquakes to predict damaging ground shaking. Preventing false alarms from these systems is key. Here we developed a simple, robust algorithm, Authorizing GRound shaking for Earthquake Early warning Systems (AGREEs), to reduce falsely issued alarms. This is a networ...

Characterizing Long-Period Ground Motions Using Bayesian Model Class Selection

National (or regional) seismic hazard maps, determined from probabilistic seismic hazard analysis, quantify the expected intensity of shaking in a region(s) over the course of one or more desired time interval(s). Building codes use these maps to define the lateral force levels for the design of new and the retrofit of existing structures. In the past, the maps depicted the shaking intensity me...

Application of real-time GPS to earthquake early warning in subduction and strike-slip environments

[1] We explore the application of GPS data to earthquake early warning and investigate whether the coseismic ground deformation can be used to provide fast and reliable magnitude estimations and ground shaking predictions. We use an algorithm to extract the permanent static offset fromGPS displacement time series and invert for the slip distribution on the fault plane, which is discretized into...
